Quick answer

For hydrolysed collagen, a common guideline is about 1 g per 10 lb (≈2 g per 10 kg) of body weight per day — but it’s an industry rule of thumb, not a clinical dose. UC-II is different, dosed at ~10–40 mg/day regardless of weight. Always follow the product label and start low for the first week.

Two different dosing systems

Hydrolysed collagen (type I & III) acts as building blocks and is dosed by weight in grams. UC-II works through immune signalling and is effective at tiny milligram doses that don’t scale with weight (Bagchi 2002; Gupta 2012).

General hydrolysed-collagen guideline (not a clinical dose).
Dog weightTypical hydrolysed collagen/day
Under ~11 kg (25 lb)~1–2 g
~11–23 kg~2–5 g
~23–41 kg~5–8 g
Over ~41 kg~8–12 g
Start low and go slowIntroduce collagen at about half the target dose for the first week to avoid loose stool. Dogs with kidney disease or on protein-restricted diets should only use it with veterinary sign-off.

Frequently asked questions

How much collagen should I give my dog?
For hydrolysed collagen, about 1 g per 10 lb (roughly 2 g per 10 kg) of body weight daily is a common guideline; UC-II is dosed much lower at ~10–40 mg/day regardless of weight. Follow the product label and start low.
Can I give my dog collagen every day?
Yes — collagen is meant for daily, long-term use. Consistency matters more than dose size; coat changes take weeks and joints take months.
Can a dog have too much collagen?
Very high amounts mainly risk loose stool and add an unnecessary protein load. Dogs with kidney disease or protein-restricted diets should be dosed only with a vet’s guidance.
